Indonesia took center stage during the 17th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the UNESCO 2005 Convention at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Aiming to introduce and strengthen the film ecosystem while supporting artistic freedom in the country, a series of side events featured panel discussions, short film screenings, and a poster exhibition under the overarching theme of “Enhancing Artistic Freedom in Indonesia.”<\/p>\n

Invited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), Koalisi Seni played a key role in presenting its monitoring findings on the state of artistic freedom. Hafez Gumay, Advocacy Manager at Koalisi Seni, filmmaker and Koalisi Seni member Riri Riza, and Ismunandar, Indonesia\u2019s Ambassador to UNESCO, participated as panelists in these side events.<\/p>\n

As a key partner in advocating for artistic freedom in Southeast Asia, Koalisi Seni was also invited to attend the Freemuse Network Meeting. Freemuse, Koalisi Seni\u2019s international partner in artistic freedom advocacy, regularly monitors the global artistic freedom landscape. The year 2024 marks a significant moment as Freemuse received a UNESCO Aschberg grant to organize a meeting with monitoring partners from various countries. This gathering aimed to refine monitoring methodologies, share reflections from ongoing work, and strengthen networks.<\/p>\n

Ratri Ninditya, Research Coordinator at Koalisi Seni, participated in this meeting alongside representatives from Nhimbe Trust (Zimbabwe), MOBILE\/Article19 (Brazil), ArtsEquator (Singapore), Belarus PEN, Susma24 (Turkey), PEN International, and UNESCO Paris. Together, they discussed the challenges of monitoring artistic freedom, explored innovative solutions, and fostered collaborations.<\/p>\n

Through the platform kebebasanberkesenian.id, Koalisi Seni has established a strategic partnership as a global artistic freedom monitoring partner. In collaboration with Freemuse, Koalisi Seni is working to develop an Artistic Freedom monitoring methodology that can be adapted in various countries.<\/p>\n

Koalisi Seni remains committed to monitoring artistic freedom year after year. Currently, it is preparing the 2023 annual artistic freedom report, based on data gathered through kebebasanberkesenian.id. This reinforces Koalisi Seni\u2019s dedication to advocating for artistic freedom not only in Indonesia but also on a global scale.<\/p>\n
