Nyak Ina Raseuki or commonly called Ubiet, is someone who is active in the world of music. Born in Jakarta, May 24, 1965, grew up in Aceh. She is active as a vocalist, improviser, composer and ethnomusicologist. Since her teenage years, as a vocalist Ubiet has joined several popular music groups in Aceh and Jakarta. After moving back to Jakarta in the 1980s, Ubiet studied voice, western classical vocals at the Jakarta Arts Institute (IKJ), while becoming a vocalist in a jazz music group, Splash Band. Ubiet’s perseverance in studying voice, then Indonesian singing, took her to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, United States and earned a Master of Music and Ph.D in ethnomusicology, and then became a lecturer at the IKJ Graduate School.
Ubiet’s artistic exploration is in the realm of voice, especially in experimenting with the diversity of techniques, timbre and ornamentation. Her vocal work is inspired by the diversity of local vocal works combined with national and international vocal works. To enrich her vocal experiments, she explored regions in Indonesia, observing, and researching the richness of the traditional Indonesian singing heritage. In addition to her commitment in the field of music research, Ubiet continues to maintain collaborations with several composers, popular and traditional musicians to explore various musical genres in various performances and recordings. Some of the recordings she has released include with the New Jakarta Ensemble, Commonality (Siam Record, New York, 1999), Archipelagongs (Warner Music Indonesia, 1999), Music for Solo Performer: Ubiet Sings Tony Prabowo (Musikita, Jakarta, 2006), and Ubiet & Kroncong Tenggara (demajors, Jakarta, 2007/2013). In addition, he also released an album with Dian HP, music based on Indonesian literary songs from the 1940s-1960s, namely the Eight Love Composition (demajors, Jakarta, 2011) and a collaboration based on Malay music, Dedendangan. The latest, Olaijolo (BIR, 2024) is based on East Indonesian songs (2024).
Ubiet is often involved in a number of music performances that combine various genres, such as classical-contemporary, popular-contemporary, and traditional-contemporary. She often presents her own works, as well as the works of other musicians on music stages, film soundtracks, dance performances, theater performances, fashion shows, and art exhibitions. In addition to actively teaching and collaborating with various musicians, Ubiet has served as Secretary General of Nusantara Arts Education (2002-2006) and Member of the Music Committee of the Jakarta Arts Council (2006-2009).
